Personal Interests
Get to know me on a personal level.
I developed a vision for an AI-powered tool designed to help music producers break through creative blocks and push boundaries in sound design. During my Advanced AI Product Management course, I collaborated with a small international product team to outline the necessary technologies and develop PRDs. I pitched our formal proposal during a VC-hosted competition and we were awarded first place, recognized for the product's proposal, development feasibility, positioning, and potential for funding. Our process involved defining the product’s mission, core features, technology requirements, market analysis, competitor landscape, and success metrics. The technical requirements specified the AI architecture and frameworks needed to bring this vision to life. I created mockups of the plugin's interface and composed several song variations to demonstrate how The Variator Plugin could revolutionize the creative process for music producers.Navigate through the tabs below and listen to the audio under MVP to explore what the Variator can do.
Mission
Empowering artists to unlock their full creative potential with an intuitive AI-driven plugin that streamlines musical experimentation, inspires innovation, and simplifies the production process, allowing music producers to focus on their artistry and output.
About
The Variator Plugin is an AI-powered tool that enables music producers to randomly generate alternative compositions of songs created in digital audio workstations. It allows users to experiment with their sound design, offering variations that can inspire creativity or be directly utilized in their projects. This plugin enhances a music producer's workflow by analyzing and rearranging tracks in a DAW. By leveraging AI, it provides alternative arrangements, allowing the user to adjust parameters such as danceability, genre, and mood. The system will generate new MIDI sequences and audio patterns, optimizing the music's flow and coherence across all tracks. The Variator "listens" to the user’s musical elements and track arrangements to generate alternative rhythms for a selected section of a song. By analyzing the musical data based on the user’s criteria, it provides alternative clip arrangements for each track while preserving the overall cohesiveness of the sound. These criteria are automatically determined by the song’s key elements, such as rhythm, genre, and energy level, to ensure the generated rhythms are aligned with the original piece. Additionally, users can manually input specific criteria, such as the desired genre, artistic style, or sentiment. Users can also upload a reference song from their desktop. The Variator will then generate clip arrangement suggestions using the user’s audio samples, instruments, and synthesizers, allowing them to explore different compositions of their original sound design. Users can import these tracks into their projects without altering the sound design or quality, and also export compositions as audio files to their desktop for future inspiration.
Use Cases
Breaking Through Producer's Block
Producers struggle to come up with new ideas or are stuck on how to arrange multiple tracks cohesively, maintaining their original sound design. Artists want to maintain their original sound design and are looking for creative breakthroughs, inspiration, and musical direction.
Efficiency
Professionals want a tool that can analyze their music and offer various arrangements based on specific parameters (genre, mood, danceability). Producers want alternative ideas for multi-track sequences, loops, and phases for a song they are producing.
Experimentation
Users want to quickly experiment with different musical styles and arrangements without manually rearranging tracks.
Text-to-Audio Ideation
Producers want to input descriptions like "Make this sound more energetic" to guide their arrangements, enabling a faster, more intuitive creative process.
The Problem
Music producers are often limited by time and creativity when it comes to arranging tracks. They may struggle with creative stagnation, maintaining their creativity under tight deadlines, and navigating complex, unfriendly technical tools that hinder their ability to produce music efficiently and stay inspired. They need a tool that uses AI to streamline the arrangement process. With the evolution of music and the unlimited, inventive potential of the creative mind, new arrangements may need to incorporate or be based on arrangements they’ve already created. Templated arrangements offered through competitors do not address the increasing invention of new genres and sounds.A plugin that allows users to rearrange tracks using both metrics and natural language input, to describe their desired sound and generate arrangements accordingly will save time and enable more creative exploration.
Pain Points
Creative Blocks
Like professional producers, artists and musicians can face creative blocks, where inspiration is hard to find, and the process of writing or composing feels stagnant. These blocks can be particularly frustrating for those who rely on consistent output to maintain engagement with their audience.
Music Theory
Artist may face difficulty in achieving a balance between multiple elements such as harmony, rhythm, and melody.
Experimentation
Users want to quickly experiment with different musical styles, genres, and arrangements without manually rearranging tracks.
Capturing Emotion
Artists may sense the music they want to produce in their body and mind, but lack the means of translating their sentiment to music. They may have difficulty in achieving specific music styles or moods without advanced technical skills, and may be more drawn to describing what they want to create musical adjustments.
Financial Constraints
Many artists and musicians, especially those who are independent, operate on tight budgets. This can limit their access to high-quality recording equipment, production tools, and professional studio time. Financial constraints may also restrict opportunities for marketing, distribution, and live performances, which are crucial for building a fan base and generating income.
Pressure to Innovate
Artists often feel the need to produce music that is both original and commercially viable. The pressure to innovate while staying true to their artistic vision can lead to self-doubt and hesitation, making the creative process more difficult.
Standing Out in a Crowded Market
The music industry is saturated with talent, and it can be challenging for artists and musicians to differentiate themselves and gain recognition. Over 150,000 songs are released everyday. Breaking through the noise requires not only exceptional talent but also strategic marketing, branding, and networking, areas where many artists may struggle.
Changing Trends
Music trends can change rapidly, and artists may feel pressured to adapt their sound to fit current market demands, even if it diverges from their original style. This can create tension between artistic integrity and commercial success.
Learning Curve
Many artists may not have formal training in music production, mixing, or mastering, yet these skills are increasingly necessary in a DIY environment. The steep learning curve of mastering these technical aspects can be a significant barrier to producing professional-sounding music.
Keeping Up with Technology
As new tools and technologies emerge, artists must continuously learn and adapt. This constant need for technical development can be overwhelming, especially for those who prefer to focus on the creative aspects of music-making.
Market Insights
Music production plugins are a rapidly growing segment in both professional and amateur markets. With the increasing adoption of DAWs, there's high demand for tools that streamline complex production tasks, including arrangement and composition. Additionally, text-to-audio is a novel feature that can enhance creativity by providing a more intuitive way for users to communicate with the plugin, making this plugin highly competitive across the music and film industries.

Assumptions & Constraints
The user must provide well-defined MIDI tracks and audio samples for accurate analysis.
The user must manually group all tracks and apply the plugin to the group.
Integration with multiple DAWs requires maintaining compatibility with varying formats. (For example, only a few popular DAWs have a Session View/Clip View feature. Utilizing this feature will make the Variator plugin much more flexible, but won’t be offered across the board.)
Data Collection & Model Training
Analyze Songs using LibROSA python
Extract relevant musical features from songs and audio files in the chosen genre, mood, or energy level (dancability), such as tempo, rhythm, pitch, key, harmonic structures, and musical elements.
LibROSA will help analyze the musical structure and features of songs within the chosen genre. The goal is to extract features that can guide the generation of new MIDI sequences.
Spotify Music Analysis API for Higher-Level Features
Utilize the Spotify API to access more abstract and high-level features (danceability, mood, genre, artist)
Combine data collected from LibROSA and Spotify Music Analysis API
Combine these datasets to create a richer representation of the songs. For example, use Spotify's mood and danceability features alongside the detailed rhythmic and harmonic data from LibROSA.
Human Review of Extracted Features: After using LibROSA and the Spotify API to extract features, music producers and engineers review the relevance and accuracy of these features. Their feedback can inform adjustments to the feature extraction process, ensuring the most important aspects of the music are captured.
Train Natural Language Processing (NLP) model
Train the NLP: The NLP will interpret text commands to define musical properties, translating them into changes in the arrangement (e.g., increasing tempo, adjusting energy levels, adding drum patterns).
Train a VA-VAE 2 (Variational Autoencoder with Vector Quantization) Model
Feed the combined feature set into the VA-VAE 2 model to learn a compressed latent representation of the musical features extracted from the songs. This will enable it to generate new variations of harmonic and melodic patterns based on the latent space.
Train a VA-VAE 2 (Variational Autoencoder with Vector Quantization) Model
The Transformer model can handle the longer-term structure of a song, such as verses, choruses, and overall arrangement. Transformers excel at sequence-to-sequence tasks, and for music, they can be trained on sequences of MIDI events.
Train the Transformer to predict the next MIDI event or note in a sequence, conditioning it on the musical context (chords, melody, rhythm) from the VA-VAE model.
Human feedback & Reinforcement learning: During the training of the VA-VAE 2 model, human reviewers will evaluate the generated variations of harmonic and melodic patterns. Based on their feedback (e.g., preferences for certain styles, rhythms, or harmonies), engineers will adjust the training process to reinforce the generation of more desirable outcomes. This will be done through a rewards signal mechanism, where positive feedback on generated outputs results in adjustments to the model's parameters, enhancing the quality of future generations.
Convert Generated Data into MIDI (pretty_midi)
Convert the generated sequence output from VA-VAE and the Transformer into MIDI files using pretty_midi. This will allow the music producer to import the sequences into their DAW for further editing and production.
Human testing / Reinforcement Learning on Midi Output
Collect feedback on the final output.
Integrate feedback into the next iteration of the process.
Plugin Framework & Development
JUCE Framework
JUCE is a widely used framework for building audio applications and plugins. It supports VST, VST3, AU, and AAX formats.
Developing the plugin
MIDI Input/Output:
Implement MIDI input handling to receive the MIDI data you’ve generated.
Use the appropriate API calls to send MIDI data to the DAW.
Graphical User Interface (GUI):
Design the GUI using the framework’s tools (JUCE has a Projucer tool for UI design).
Display MIDI notes visually, similar to a piano roll.
Playback Logic
Implement the logic for playback of the MIDI data using the selected instruments.
Train the NLP: The NLP will interpret text commands to define musical properties, translating them into changes in the arrangement (e.g., increasing tempo, adjusting energy levels, adding drum patterns).
Copyright Feature
Variator provide checks to ensure the AI-generated music or musical elements (such as chord progressions, melodies, or samples) are original and not overly similar to existing tracks in the market, protecting artists from unintentional plagiarism and helping maintain their unique sound.
Results & Similarity Score
After analysis, the system presents a similarity score for each musical element (melody, chord progression, rhythm, etc.) as well as an overall score. The feature also highlights which specific parts of the generated composition are highly similar to existing tracks, allowing artists to make informed decisions on whether to tweak the composition or keep it as is.
Recommendation System
Based on the similarity score, the plugin will recommend alterations to reduce similarity and avoid potential legal issues. For example, if the melody is too similar to a known track, Variator will suggest changing a few notes or modifying the rhythm slightly.
Legal and Copyright Warnings
The system flags any compositions that exceed a certain similarity threshold and provides legal warnings about potential risks of copyright infringement. This helps artists stay within safe boundaries, especially when releasing music commercially.
Customizability
Artists can adjust the sensitivity of the similarity check depending on their needs. For instance, they can opt for stricter checks when seeking completely original work or allow for more flexibility if they’re comfortable with using familiar musical structures.
Challenges
Cost to create model & store data
Costs for human feedback loops and time to analyze
Accounting for the multiple methods of sound design when there are dependencies on multiple tracks
Competitive Pricing
Ensuring that the NLP text interpretation is accurate enough to provide meaningful changes to the arrangement.
Real-time performance to handle quick processing and previews
